How To Build Confidence in Photography

“I struggle with confidence in my photography.”

I can relate to not knowing how to build confidence in photography when I started taking photographs because I felt lost. Every time I picked up a camera I’d hear a voice saying, “is this setting correct?” or “will this come out right?”. I wasted a lot of time trying to figure out photography and fix my mistakes in post.

Recently, I sent out a survey to a group of photographers asking them about their biggest struggles in photography. To my surprise, lacking confidence was mentioned over 70% of the time.

So, how do you build confidence in your photography? I believe the secret to building confidence is using a confidence builder, (a.k.a. a light meter.) Most photographers think a light meter only gives you a correct exposure but it does much more.

Let’s say you want to take a photograph of five people using a strobe light but you’re not sure what gear you should use or which light modifier will cover your subjects best? By using a confidence builder and measuring the light you will learn exactly how your light falls. You discover how each light modifier shapes light, how the distance and height affect light, and how to get perfect exposures every time.
